Before The Throne of God Above

This awe­some hymn really encour­aged me in church this morn­ing. The sec­ond verse is par­tic­u­larly powerful:

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and per­fect plea:
A great High Priest, whose name is Love,
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is writ­ten on His heart;
I know that while in heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair,
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look, and see him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sin­less Savior died,
My sin­ful soul is counted free;
For God, the Just, is sat­is­fied
To look on Him and par­don me

Behold him there, the risen Lamb
My per­fect, spot­less right­eous­ness,
The great unchange­able I Am,
The King of Glory and of Grace!

When we are tempted to doubt our sal­va­tion or to despair because of the sin remain­ing in our lives, we need only to look to Jesus, to remem­ber what he has done. We should no longer let Satan tell us that we still owe him ser­vice. The price has been paid and we are free. “Upward I look and see Him there, who made an end to all my sin. Because the sin­less Savior died, my sin­ful soul is counted free… It was a joy­ous thought on this Sunday morn­ing, to remem­ber that we are no longer slaves but free, because God is will­ing and sat­is­fied to look on his sin­less Son and par­don us! Let us never lose sight of that incred­i­ble, over­whelm­ing truth.
